Vera Woods
Vera Woods of Independence, KS, died Sunday, April 25, 2010, at Windsor Place of Independence, KS. She was 90.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel. Rev. Jim Blocher will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
The daughter of Charlie and Emma (Berg) Johnson, she was born May 11, 1919, in Grand Island, NE. She moved to Independence at an early age and graduated from Independence High School.
She was united in marriage to Charlie Woods on April 1, 1936, in Independence, KS. He preceded her in death on November 16, 1982.
Mrs. Woods was employed by Electra and ACC before retiring in 1984.
Vera was a member of the First Baptist Church, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Independence Garden Club.
Survivors include one son, Eldon Woods, of Independence, KS; five daughters, Doris Easter of Sacramento, CA, Janice Albin of Hesperia, CA, Virginia Hilyard of Fredonia, KS, Sharon Leon of Wylie, TX, and Sandra O’Brien of Kansas City, MO; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by one son, Larry Woods; one brother, Lyle Johnson; one sister Genevieve McNairn; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church and may be left at the funeral home.
