Rex C. Vernon, 68, of Independence, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at his home.

Cremation has taken place. No services are planned. Cremation is under the direction of the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel of Independence.

The family has suggested memorial remembrances to A.W.O.L. and remembrances will be received at the funeral home.

Rex Cadet Vernon was born February 1, 1941 at Oberlin, Kansas, the son of Owen Stanley Vernon and Alice Jeannette (Peterson) Vernon. He attended Oberlin schools and graduated from Oberlin High School. He attended Kansas State University for a time and then joined the United States Army. He served in the military for 11 years. After his military service he returned to Kansas State University and received a degree in Industrial Engineering. He worked for a time for Square D. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and then moved to Independence where he was employed with Automotive Controls Corporation until his retirement.

On June 19, 1965 at Wrose, Yorkshire, England, he was united in marriage to Marcia Mell. Mrs. Vernon preceded her husband in death on July 24, 2000.

Survivors include a brother, Ralph Vernon of Corpus Christi, Texas and a sister Marjorie Olson of Oberlin, Kansas.
